Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has announced the approval of the Aflao Traditional Area of 159 acres of land for the construction of an ultramodern market in Aflao, to be funded by a $30 million grant from China.
The minister made the announcement after a visit to the Volta Region in a social media update after a visit to the Volta Region city with the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Tong Defa, the Minister described the project as “a priority initiative that will boost ECOWAS trade, create jobs, and transform Aflao into a modern trading hub.”
The Minister indicated that the project, originally pledged by former President John Mahama, is now set to begin, with the full backing of local leadership.
“We are deeply grateful to Togbui Adjongaga Amenya Fiti V and the people of Aflao for their generous land allocation and warm support,”
The Foreign Minister praised the grant as “a non-refundable gift from the people and government of China,” adding that it marks another milestone in Ghana-China relations.
The upcoming market is expected to complement the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) by promoting cross-border commerce and regional integration.
