Some cocoa farmers in the Ahafo Region are threatening to hoard their produce if government fails to peg the price of a bag of cocoa at 6,000 cedis.
The farmers, mainly from the Asunafo North Municipality, say they feel betrayed by the NDC government, which they claim promised to increase the price per bag to not less than 6,000 cedis before the 2024 elections.
But according to them, information reaching them suggests government may not honour that promise, an outcome they describe as unacceptable.
They warn that if the expected price announcement in August falls below 6,000 cedis, they will withhold their cocoa bags and consider exporting them directly to neighboring countries.
They argue that cocoa smuggling will persist if government continues to neglect the economic welfare of cocoa farmers.
“We are tired of empty promises. If government fails to honour the 6,000 cedis price, we’ll keep our cocoa. No one should blame us if we find other means to sell it. Farmers deserve better.”
