Akwaboah Snr begs musicians to train more; says VGMA performances were terrible

Legendary Ghanaian Highlife musician Kwadwo Akwaboah Snr has described the new crop of Ghanaian musicians as a bunch with really terrible voices.

The highlife legend came to this realization after listening to performances from various artistes at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) which was held over the weekend.

He made this revelation in an exclusive interview on Happy 98.9FM’s Ayekoo After Drive with the tag team made up of DJ Advicer and NY DJ, host of Y102.5 FM’s (Kumasi) Ryse N Shyne show.

Akwaboah Snr said, “I never listen to these programs and award schemes but because of Kwabena, I decided to sit through the VGMA. I sat and listened to the voices of these performing artistes and they sounded very poor. Some of them have really bad voices.”

With a high authority over the subject of music, the revered musician noted that the current crop of musicians sound so bad because they do not take time to train their voices.

“I wasn’t impressed with their voices at the VGMA. Some of them sounded differently from their records,” he sadly reiterated.

He advised present day musicians to rather focus on training their voices and performing more with live bands.

“They should seek help from voice trainers and focus more on stage performances instead of studio recordings and auto tuning techniques. That is how our musicians can sound and do well,”

The veteran artiste who was not done in giving coaching lessons to the younger generation encouraged muscians, especially those doing highlife to be skilled in the playing of at least one instrument.

“Every highlife artiste must be conversant with an instrument. In our day, every muscian was at least talented with a guitar or piano.”
