Residents of Akwamu in the Asuogyaman District of the Eastern Region have staged a demonstration and issued a two-week ultimatum to the government to address long-standing challenges in the district.

In an interview with Happy Kaseɛbɔ, Mr. Daniel Asare Owusu, a convener of the demonstrators, expressed frustration that despite numerous complaints to the government about the deplorable state of roads in the area, no action has been taken.

He highlighted that roads such as those in Akwamu Township, Ajena to Gyakiti, Akwamu Mpakadam, and Aboabo are in disrepair, and the government has failed to make any plans to fix them. The residents have vowed to take to the streets again if their demands are not met within the two-week deadline.

Mr. Daniel Asare Owusu further expressed his disappointment and frustration that the Tema-Akwamu railway line, which passes through Adome in Akwamu, was renamed Juapong Railway Station after its construction, despite being located in Adome and not Juapong. He revealed that the Paramount Chief of Akwamu State, Odeneho Kwafo Akoto III, had written to the Ministry of Railways to address this issue, but received no response.

Additionally, Mr. Owusu complained that the Adomi Bridge, located at Atimpoku on Akwamu land, was renamed Volta Bridge after its renovation by former President John Dramani Mahama. He emphasized that the residents are vehemently opposed to this name change, fearing that it may lead to their land being claimed by the Volta region. The residents are urging the government to promptly revert the names of these two projects to their original and rightful designations.
