Former Minister of Finance and Member of Parliament for Karaga, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, has criticised what he describes as excessive publicity surrounding the government’s repayment of energy sector debts.
His comments follow an announcement by the Ministry of Finance that the government has decisively addressed Ghana’s energy sector debt, describing the move as a significant step toward restoring financial stability and boosting international confidence.
In a statement issued on Monday, January 12, the Ministry indicated that as of December 31, 2025, the John Mahama administration had paid a total of US$1.47 billion to stabilize and reset the energy sector.
Reacting to the announcement in a Facebook post, Dr. Amin Adam argued that such repayments are not unprecedented. He accused the government of turning routine financial obligations into public relations exercises, noting that similar payments were made under the previous administration without fanfare.
“The NDC government does PR with everything. Paying energy sector debts of about US$1.4 billion is not new. As captured in the 2025 Budget presented by the NDC government itself, the previous NPP government paid about US$1.4 billion in energy sector debts in 2024 without making noise about it,” he stated.
