Traditional authorities at Asuofua in the Atwima Nwabiagya North District of the Ashanti Region have dismissed allegations that they paid bribes to secure the government’s 24-hour economy market project for their community.
The 24-Hour Economy Policy, a flagship government initiative aimed at boosting economic activity and creating jobs, is set to roll out nationwide, with contracts already awarded and supervision underway in selected beneficiary communities. Asuofua has been named as one of the communities to benefit from the project.
However, the decision has sparked controversy, particularly in Barekese, the district capital, where some residents recently staged a demonstration against the District Assembly. The protesters argued that the project should have been sited in Barekese instead of Asuofua.
During the protest, demonstrators further alleged that the Queenmother of Asuofua, Nana Barnieh Ahenkan, used her supposed relationship with the President to bribe officials in order to secure the project for her community.
Asuofua, which is said to contribute significantly to the district’s revenue, has for years complained of being sidelined in terms of government development projects. Community leaders believe the 24-hour economy market will help correct this imbalance and stimulate local economic activities.
In response to the allegations, the traditional authorities of Asuofua, together with the Assemblyman and community members, addressed the media refuting the claims.
Speaking to Happy Kasɛebɔ , Nana Barnieh Ahenkan described the allegations as false and baseless, insisting that no bribes were paid to secure the project.
The Assemblyman for Asuofua, Hon. Osei Kwaku, also appealed for calm and unity within the district.
“We are all in the same district, and Barekese, as the district capital, has enjoyed several government projects over the years with our support,” he said. “We are therefore urging them to support Asuofua as well, because this project will benefit the entire district.”
He added that the market project is intended to serve not only Asuofua but the entire Atwima Nwabiagya North District, and called on all stakeholders to put aside differences and work together for the development of the area.
