Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Vice President and Chairman of the Ghana Police Council, has urged the Ghana Police Service to uphold a peaceful, transparent, and incident-free general election this December.

Addressing a commissioning ceremony on Wednesday, October 30, at the National Police Training School in Accra, where 430 officers were promoted to Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Dr. Bawumia highlighted the essential role of the police in supporting democracy and maintaining public confidence.

“Every election presents its nuisance situation. We are, however, confident in the professionalism of the police. The police are always at the centre of elections in Ghana and officers must act responsibly”.

“The neutral, fair and firm policing that we have had before should be the reason for optimism. The good conduct of officers during the recent voter registration and exhibition exercise also provides a great blueprint and confidence for the main elections” he said.

The Vice President praised the police for their commitment to managing past elections and acknowledged their role in sustaining peace and stability.

However, he advised against complacency, encouraging the service to intensify its efforts, especially given current security challenges and increased political tensions.

“The Ghana Police Service, you have done it before and we are counting on you to do it again by maintaining high professional standards in the discharge of your duties. You are setting the perfect tone for the nation to follow in delivering a peaceful and incident-free election” he emphasized.

The Vice President highlighted the government’s continued investment in police training, logistics, and equipment, stressing that these resources are vital to enhancing the service’s ability to handle electoral security and general law enforcement effectively.
