Former Vice President and 2024 flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, is urging the NPP to rally behind a leader who unites as the party prepares for the 2028 elections.

Speaking at the NPP’s 33rd Anniversary celebration in New York on Sunday, Dr. Bawumia told party faithful that the NPP’s future depends on a leadership style that strengthens its base and appeals to the wider Ghanaian electorate.

He warned the party not to fall into tribal or religious rhetoric, insisting that such divisions only alienate voters. According to him, the qualities that matter most to Ghanaians include vision, humility, incorruptibility, steadiness under pressure, and a strong track record.

Dr. Bawumia cautioned against negative campaigning within the NPP, saying it weakens the party and hands the opposition National Democratic Congress free ammunition.

He stressed that the NPP must focus on bread-and-butter issues like the economy, tax reforms, agriculture, industry, infrastructure, and digitalisation, the same themes captured in its 2024 manifesto.

Dr. Bawumia also dismissed claims that ethnicity or religion caused the party’s poor showing in the last election. He pointed to voter apathy in the Greater Accra, Ashanti, and Eastern Regions, where the NPP lost more than two million votes between 2020 and 2024.

Calling for discipline and focus, Dr. Bawumia reminded members that the NPP was built on inclusivity and unity in diversity. He declared that tribalism and religious bigotry have no place in the party, urging members to stand together if they want to win in 2028.
