According to the Auditor-General’s 2022 report, the Ghana School Feeding Programme (GSFP) has been providing substandard and unhealthy meals to pupils in basic schools, compromising their health and well-being. The report highlights the urgent need for improved food quality and safety standards in the programme to ensure the nutrition and health of Ghana’s school children.

A comprehensive performance audit conducted by the Auditor-General on the Ghana School Feeding Programme (GSFP) uncovered alarming findings, including the use of mouldy corn dough in some schools. The audit, which assessed the programme’s progress and performance since its launch in 2005, revealed subpar food quality and mismanagement.

The program was initiated to boost enrolment and improve educational outcomes at the basic school level, but the audit’s findings raise concerns about the programme’s effectiveness and the well-being of the children it serves.

The report exposed a disturbing trend in the Ghana School Feeding Programme (GSFP), where essential nutrients were grossly neglected. Jollof rice and other dishes were consistently prepared without protein, a clear violation of the programme’s guidelines.

Furthermore, pupils and teachers reported that their complaints about the substandard food were persistently disregarded, suggesting a systemic failure in addressing these concerns. This lack of accountability raises questions about the programme’s commitment to providing nutritious meals and ensuring the well-being of the children it serves.
