The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has officially announced Swedish tactician Kim Lars Björkegren as the new head coach of the Black Queens, Ghana’s senior women’s national football team.

Björkegren, a highly experienced coach with nearly two decades in the profession, succeeds Nora Häuptle, whose tenure came to an end in December 2024 following the expiration of her contract with the GFA.

The announcement was made via an official GFA statement on Tuesday, January 14, confirming Björkegren’s appointment to lead the Black Queens into a new era of women’s football.

“Swedish Football Coach, Kim Lars Björkegren, has been appointed as the new Head Coach of the Senior National Female team, the Black Queens. He replaces Coach Nora Häuptle, whose contract with the GFA expired at the end of December 2024,” the statement read.

Björkegren’s football journey began as a player for his hometown club in Ljungsbro, Sweden, and later with Allsvenska Åtvidabergs FF, a former top-flight Swedish team. However, his playing career was cut short at age 22 due to injury, prompting him to transition into coaching—a move that has shaped his remarkable career.

With a UEFA License A coaching certificate, Björkegren has established a strong reputation over the past 18 years, coaching both in Sweden and abroad. Notable achievements include leading Apollon Ladies to a league title in Cyprus and winning the Damallsvenskan championship with Linköpings FC in Sweden.

His stellar performance during the 2020-2021 season earned him the Coach of the Season award in Cyprus.
