In the last week of October, the environmental volunteer group Buzstop Boys organized a three-day Clean Carnival along the Lapaz Akweteyman stretch in Accra; the team covered a distance of 300 metres with intense sanitation work and community engagement.

The exercise involved over 120 volunteers who dedicated long hours to the effort; they worked 10 hours on the first day; 8 hours on the second day; and 10 hours on the final day. The activities included clearing refuse; desilting clogged areas; and restoring hygiene within the community.

The initiative received support from eight sponsors; Dirt Killer; COA Mixture; Ekumfi Natural Juice; Verna of Trillium Company; Ready Milk Tea; Tatiana Haina; Verasure Insurance Brokers, Nationwide Medical Insurance and the Municipal Assembly.

Founder and leader of the Buzstop Boys, Heneba Kwadwo Sarfo, highlighted the central role of young people in Ghana’s sanitation future; he stated: “Sustainability without deliberate involvement of youth is not achievable; when young people step forward to clean the spaces they use every day, they help build a disciplined and responsible society.”

Mr. Sarfo added that the Clean Carnival is part of a long-term commitment to improving sanitation across communities; he noted that consistent youth participation remains the strongest foundation for real environmental change.

The success of the Clean Carnival demonstrates the growing impact of citizen-led sanitation initiatives; it also reaffirms the Buzstop Boys’ belief that collective action can transform neighbourhoods one community at a time.
