The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has cancelled this year’s edition of the African Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON) due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The decision was taken on Tuesday 30 June after the Executive Committee met to decide on the future of the various competitions.
The competition which was the 12th edition was supposed to be held in November with the qualifiers scheduled from April to June 2020.
DR Congo was supposed to host this year’s edition before pulling out, leaving CAF in a difficult position to select a new host.
The Super Falcons of Nigeria are the defending champions of the competition after defeating South Africa at the last edition of the tournament in Ghana.
In a press conference with journalists across the continent, Ahmad Ahmad confirmed that the next edition will be in 2022 with 12 countries as participants.
Meanwhile, the CAF Women’s Champions League will be launched in 2021. The format and other details will be communicated in due course.
