Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, is set to appear in court on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, over allegations connected to illegal mining operations involving his company, Akonta Mining Limited.

This follows his recent appearance at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters, where he was formally charged and granted bail of GH¢1 million.

Wontumi’s trial comes after a firm warning from Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, on Friday, October 3, that the NPP regional chairman would face arrest if he failed to report to authorities. The Attorney General confirmed that charges had already been filed.

The case centers on alleged unauthorized mining activities by Akonta Mining Limited. Dr. Ayine indicated that earlier prosecution efforts were hindered due to the concealment of critical case dockets under the previous administration.

Speaking ahead of the proceedings, Wontumi’s legal counsel, Lawyer Appiah Kubi, confirmed that the trial will proceed as scheduled. “We’ll see you tomorrow in court,” he said, adding that his client faces charges including mining without a license and other related offences.
