On the President’s directive on activities to help control the spread of the Coronavirus also known as COVID-19, the Ministry of Local Government in partnership with the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies has undertaken a disinfection exercise in some selected markets in the Capital, Accra.

The chlorine base disinfection exercise was to ensure that markets across the country observe enhanced hygienic practices.

Some Ghanaians have questioned the effectiveness of this exercise and most importantly the cost involved for the completion of the exercise on a nationwide scale.

Former Member of Parliament (MP) for Tema West Constituency in the Greater Accra Region and Common Fund administrator, Irene Naa Torshie Addo addressing the concerns of cost conscious Ghanaians has disclosed that the government of the day will have to spend more GHC50M to disinfect some thousand (1000) markets across the country.

In an interview on Happy98.9FM ‘Epa Hoa Daben’ she made known that, “We will disinfect the whole country. We’ve targeted 1000 markets in the entire country for disinfection. Not only markets but lorry stations and all identifiable places will also be disinfected. I cannot give you the total cost for the entire exercise nationwide but it will be more than GHC50M.”

According to her, even though the Ministry of Local Government has not received funds for the exercise, they will still go on with the disinfection because of the urgency of the matter.

Markets in the Greater Accra Region were closed down today for a disinfection exercise being undertaken by the government.

The exercise has become necessary following the confirmation of over a dozen case of COVID-19 in Ghana.
