Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, has made it clear that protesters who engaged in violent or destructive behavior will face consequences.

A peaceful protest in Accra by Democracy Hub turned violent between September 21-23, resulting in clashes between demonstrators and police. The Ghana Police Service alleged that protesters blocked roads, dismantled barriers, obstructed traffic, and burned properties at the 37 Roundabout. During the bail hearing, defense lawyers pushed for release, citing harsh conditions.

Speaking at the annual conference of the Association of Magistrates and Judges of Ghana held on the theme “Improving the Security and the Welfare of the Judiciary for Effective Justice Delivery”, in Accra, Godfred Dame emphasized that democracy does not tolerate acts of violence and tension.

Dame noted that attempts to create tension ahead of elections and instill fear through demonstrations will not be tolerated, and protesters who exceed the limits of free expression and disregard safety will face the law.

He pointed out that this is not unique to Ghana, as advanced democracies worldwide do not condone such behavior. Dame’s stance highlights the delicate balance between protecting freedom of expression and maintaining public safety.

He defended the prosecution of Democracy Hub protesters, citing concerns over violence, mayhem, and civil disobedience. He stressed that protesters must respect the safety of themselves and others, and that exceeding the limits of free expression will result in legal consequences.
