Ghanaian historian, Kwaku Darko Ankrah, has emphasized that democracy is more than just a periodic exercise of voting.

In an interview on Happy 98.9FM’s ‘Epa Hoa Daben’ with Bismark Brown, Darko Ankrah underscored the importance of active citizen participation and accountability in ensuring a democratic and equitable society.

“Democracy is a government of the people, for the people and by the people,” the historian stated. “It’s about the well-being of every citizen. When a country deteriorates, it affects everyone. Voting is a powerful tool, but it’s not just about partisanship. It’s about the growth and development of the nation.”

To commemorate International Democracy Day, Darko Ankrah joined ‘Epa Hoa Daben’ to explore the role of peace and democratic institutions in contemporary Ghana.

He highlighted the need for citizens to be vigilant and hold their leaders accountable, ensuring that governance aligns with the aspirations of the people.

Darko Ankrah further emphasized the connection between democracy and sustainable development. “The ultimate aim of governance is the happiness of the people,” he quoted. If citizens are not satisfied with the current state of affairs, it reflects a failure of governance.”

He also stressed the importance of all arms of government working together to serve the public. “As an MP, you must represent the conscience of your constituents,” Ankrah noted.

Darko Ankrah’s call for a more engaged and participatory democracy resonates with many Ghanaians who are seeking greater accountability and transparency from their leaders.

His insights offer valuable perspectives on the challenges and opportunities facing Ghana’s democratic journey.
