Vice President and flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has paid a courtesy call on the Ashantihene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, as part of his three-day campaign tour of the Ashanti Region.

Addressing the Asantehene, Dr. Bawumia explained that his visit was to formally introduce himself and seek Otumfuo’s blessing. Reflecting on the deep historical ties between the NPP and the Manhyia Palace, he said, “If you are an NPP member and you visit the Manhyia Palace, you know that the heart and soul of the NPP resides here.”

Dr. Bawumia recounted the formation of the party at the Manhyia Palace, highlighting the significant role played by prominent Ashanti figures such as Baffour Osei Akoto in establishing the National Liberation Movement (NLM) which subsequently led to the formation of the NPP.
He noted that the collaboration between Ashantis and Northerners was crucial in the party’s creation and success.

He expressed his gratitude to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, acknowledging that without his support, he would not have become the party’s flagbearer.

Dr. Bawumia also outlined his vision for the presidency, emphasizing key priorities. He stressed the importance of developing the railway sector, citing the success of other countries, pledging to collaborate with the private sector to enhance Ghana’s railway system. He specifically mentioned the Boankra Inland Port, stating that its full potential could only be realized with a robust railway network.

Dr. Bawumia discussed plans to transform the country’s power generation system. He proposed shifting from oil and gas to solar power, leveraging Ghana’s abundant sunlight. He aims to bring on board 2,000 megawatts of solar power in addition to the Akosombo Dam, which he believes will reduce electricity costs by at least 50%
