Ghanaian leader Akufo-Addo on Thursday signed into law the controversial Electronic Transaction Levy (E-levy) Bill barely two days of passage by a vote from Majority MPs in Parliament.

The President’s action now paves the way for the implementation of the levy, after months of uncertainty and political bickering.

Parliament passed the bill on Tuesday, March 29, 2022, in the absence of the Minority MPs, who had walked out before the Bill was considered at the second reading stage.

The levy, which was amended from 1.75 percent to 1.5 percent on Tuesday, March 29, 2022, will be a tax on electronic transactions, which includes mobile-money payments.

The charge will apply to electronic transactions that are more than GH¢100 on a daily basis.

Three Minority lawmakers have already filed a suit at the Supreme Court to overturn the passage of the bill.

Delivering the State of the Nation Address on Wednesday, President Akufo-Addo said he was happy about the passage of the bill stressing that it is a start of a new beginning to revive the country’s economy.
