EC orders destruction of recalled ballot papers in Eastern and Western Regions

The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has instructed candidates to appoint two representatives each at the regional level to oversee the destruction of ballot papers in the Eastern and Western Regions.

This decision follows the recall and reprinting of ballot papers for these regions due to a reported leakage. The issue arose after National Security discovered a single defaced ballot paper from the Checkpoint Printing Limited Printing House had been removed and improperly circulated. The paper, meant for destruction, was mishandled, prompting the EC to take immediate action.

At an emergency press conference on December 1, EC Chairperson Jean Mensa explained the situation, noting that the printing house has collaborated with the Commission since 1992.

As a result, the EC postponed special voting in the Eastern and Western Regions from December 2 to December 5.

A statement from Deputy Chairman of Operations, Samuel Tettey, issued on Tuesday December 3, confirmed the destruction of the recalled ballot papers would occur at 4 p.m. that same day in Koforidua for the Eastern Region and Sekondi-Takoradi for the Western Region.

Candidates’ agents are directed to contact regional directors Effe Wilson in the Western Region and Appiah Baffoe in the Eastern Region for details about the venues.
