Election 2024: ECOWAS denies predicting violence

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission has denied claims that it predicted violence in Ghana’s 2024 general elections.

This denial comes after The Herald Newspaper published an article on August 21, 2024, alleging that the commission had forecasted violence in the electoral process, citing a supposed “draft statement” from the ECOWAS Pre-Election Fact-Finding Mission to Ghana. The ECOWAS Commission has dismissed this claim, stating that it did not predict violence in its report.

The ECOWAS Commission has issued an official statement to set the record straight, stating that its pre-electoral missions do not publicly disclose their findings, as these reports are confidential and exclusively meant for the Commission’s President to facilitate engagements with member states.

The Commission denied predicting violence in Ghana’s electoral process, dismissing The Herald’ newspaper’s report as a severe misrepresentation of the Mission’s procedures and findings. ECOWAS emphasized that its reports are not intended for public consumption, and any claims suggesting otherwise are entirely inaccurate.
