The Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) has established a 9-member committee to facilitate the 2024 presidential debates. The committee’s primary objective is to engage with political parties and ensure their participation in the upcoming debates.

The IEA had earlier revealed plans to host two debates, one for presidential candidates in October and another for vice-presidential candidates in November. These debates aim to provide a platform for candidates to discuss their policies and visions for Ghana’s future.

The 9-member presidential debate committee, boasts an impressive lineup of distinguished individuals. The committee’s membership includes Justice Sophia Akuffo, who serves as Chairperson, alongside Dr. Humphrey Ayim-Darke, Dr. Abukari Mohammed Marzaq Azindoo, Rev. Father Charles Boampong Sarfo, and Most Reverend Dr. Paul Kwabena Boafo, among others.

Addressing the media, Chairperson Justice Sophia Akuffo affirmed the committee’s readiness to commence its work, ensuring the active participation of political parties in the upcoming presidential debates. With their collective expertise and experience, the committee is poised to facilitate meaningful and insightful discussions among Ghana’s presidential hopefuls.

Justice Sophia Akuffo stressed that the primary goal of the presidential debate committee is to increase the debate’s credibility by focusing on the people and the issues that matter most. The committee aims to create a unique platform where presidential candidates can clearly articulate their policies and visions for governing the country.

This platform seeks to educate and empower citizens, enabling them to make informed decisions at the polls. Furthermore, the committee hopes to promote peace and stability throughout the electoral process, from the pre-election period to the post-election phase, ensuring a harmonious and democratic experience for all.
