Managing Director of the Metro Mass Transit Limited (MTTL), Albert Adu Boahen, has announced some benefits the newly inaugurated electric buses will bring to Ghanaians.

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia today, Wednesday November, 27, inaugurated Ghana’s first fleet of electric buses (EVs).

Speaking during the inauguration, the Managing Director of Metro Mass Transit Limited, stated that the deployment of the buses is aimed at introducing energy efficient buses into the organization’s operations.

“Not only as a means of revamping the company’s mass transit services but also to help MMT play a leading role in the transition to the use of electric vehicles in support of the zero emission agenda enshrined in the national electric policy” he said.

He added that the deployment of the electric buses is also a transformative move that will have far reaching economic benefits for Ghanaians as well as help reduce the cost of operation and lowering fuel expenses.

“We have found that fuel costs accounts for as much as 55% of our revenue from intracity operations the energy cost of these new electric buses will constitute just 15% of the revenue and this represents a remarkable 40% savings in operational cost allowing us to reinvest in expanding and enhancing our services” he said.

He added that parts of the cost reduction will also be passed through the public through more affordable fares and more frequent and reliable service.

“ Additionally electric buses provide a smoother and quieter ride improving the overall passenger experience” he emphasized.

Test operations for the buses are set to begin this week, aligning with Dr. Bawumia’s vision of introducing electric vehicles as a cost-effective solution for the transportation sector.
