The Energy Committee of Ghana’s Parliament has intensified efforts to uncover the mystery surrounding the disappearance of 1,357 containers belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

The missing containers, originally reported to hold critical cables and electrical equipment, were discovered to be unaccounted for during an audit of Tema Port, sparking concern about transparency and financial management within the power sector.

During a high-level meeting at the Peduase Valley Resort, representatives from ECG, the Bui Power Authority, and the Volta River Authority were questioned about their operational plans for 2025.

The issue of the missing containers dominated discussions, prompting ECG’s Acting Managing Director, Kwame Kpekpena, to assure the committee that efforts are underway alongside the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority to locate and recover the lost assets.

Further investigations have revealed a troubling series of procurement lapses, including the awarding of contracts to unlicensed firms and the discontinuation of ECG’s fund for shipment clearance due to financial constraints.

In a bid to uncover the truth, the Attorney General and the Ghana Police Service have joined the inquiry, with several individuals already identified for questioning.

Meanwhile, energy think tank IMANI Ghana is set to participate in the next round of deliberations, aiming to provide expert recommendations on improving accountability and preventing similar losses in the future.
