Former Asante Kotoko midfielder Joseph Amoako has been sentenced to two years in prison after being found guilty of raping a 16-year old Swedish girl.

Amoako, who plays midfielder for Helsingborgs IF (HIF), a Swedish professional soccer team, is sentenced for the rape.

The 20-year-old is sentenced to prison for two years and deportation, but he can travel back to Sweden in ten years, reports Samnytt media.

In early October, two of HIF’s players were arrested on suspicion of rape in May of the past year but were later released after questioning. After a few days, prosecutors dropped the investigation against one of the players – who returned to training with the club.

However, Amoako, a citizen of Ghana, was charged with rape, although he denies the charges. On Thursday, Helsingborg’s district court announced that the footballer would be sentenced to prison for two years and deported from Sweden, but he will be allowed to return in ten years. Furthermore, the African must pay the girl “damages” of SEK 215,000 (USD 20,617).

Details of the case

The investigation shows that the former HIF player made contact with the victim via social media. He allegedly gave her match tickets and let her use his apartment.

According to the verdict, Amoako invited the teenage girl to his home for a party. When she fell asleep, he performed sexual acts against her, which the district court determines is comparable to rape. The minor woke up and stopped the abuse before seeking help. When she spoke to a school nurse after the summer, a police report was made.

HIF: “He has interesting qualities”

Helsingborgs IF has announced they are breaking their contract with Amoako. The club’s sporting director Andreas Granqvist has previously said about the player.

“Joseph is a player we have followed for a while. He has interesting qualities that we believe can help us during the season. His main strengths lie in his speed and play with the ball. We look forward to getting to know him more in our environment and following his development.”
