As Ghana’s annual fishing closed season commences, the Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Mavis Hawa Koomson, has cautioned fishermen against indulging in illegal fishing practices. She emphasized the importance of adhering to the regulations in place to ensure the sustainability of the fishing industry and the replenishment of fish stocks.
The minister’s warning serves as a reminder of the consequences of non-compliance, urging fishermen to respect the closed season and support the conservation efforts.

At a ceremony in Western Region, marking the beginning of the fishing closed season, Minister Hawa Koomson sternly warned that any individuals found flouting the ban would be subject to stringent sanctions.

She emphasized the government’s commitment to enforcing the regulations and protecting the industry’s future, leaving no room for non-compliance.

The Minister warned that her office has received intelligence that some fishermen intend to flout the closed season regulations by illegally offloading their catch at the Togo border. She emphasized that such actions will not be tolerated and those found guilty will face swift arrest and prosecution.
