Former Minister for Finance, Mr. Ken Ofori-Atta, has been detained by the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) over issues relating to his current immigration status in the United States.
In a statement released by the law firm Minkah-Premo, Osei-Bonsu, Bruce-Cathline & Partners, Mr. Ofori-Atta was detained by ICE as of Tuesday, January 6 while authorities reviewed the status of his stay in the country.
The statement explained that Mr. Ofori-Atta has a pending petition for adjustment of status, a legal process under U.S. law that permits an individual to remain in the United States beyond the expiration of their visa while their application is under consideration.
The law firm noted that such applications are common and lawful within the U.S. immigration system.
It further disclosed that Mr. Ofori-Atta’s legal team in the United States is in active engagement with ICE and is optimistic that the matter will be resolved promptly.
The law firm emphasized that the former finance minister is a law-abiding individual who is fully cooperating with U.S. immigration authorities to ensure an expeditious resolution of the issue.
The public has therefore been urged to remain calm as the legal processes take their course.
