Educator and Founder of Ashesi University, Patrick Awuah Jr, has asserted in relation with the free SHS system, that families who do not need taxpayers’ support should be allowed to pay for their children’s’ fees so that more focus can be placed on families who actually do need the tax support.

In an interview with Yfm’s Rev. Erskine on the Y-Leaderboard Series, he commented that free SHS, which is helping to get people freely educated to the highest level possible, is a good initiative and having it funded by the taxpayer, is a fine thing to do as well.

Patrick said, however, that, “As you start something like that in Ghana, recognize that there are families that don’t need taxpayers’ support to send their kids to school so have them pay for their kids’ education so that you can focus the tax support on those families who really do need the support”.

According to him, this will also help to release funds that can be used for other projects such as building roads, getting water systems deployed in areas that do not have them, and a whole lot.

“Building a country involves a lot of different things so you free up money to do other things that are also important”, the engineer added.
