GFA: Premier League ExCo Member refutes reports of betPawa ending sponsorship deal

Nana Sarfo Oduro, a Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council member representing Ghana Premier League clubs, has emphatically denied recent claims that betPawa is terminating its sponsorship agreement with the GFA, just one year into what was originally intended to be a three-year partnership.

Nana Sarfo Oduro conveyed his reassurance during an interview on Happy FM, stressing the GFA’s commitment to maintaining its sponsorship arrangement with betPawa to ensure the continued growth and sustainability of the Ghana Premier League.

The initial three-year sponsorship agreement, which was enthusiastically announced on August 3, 2022, aimed to elevate the league’s marketing and its standing on the African football stage.

Regrettably, it seems that betPawa has decided to end its association with the Ghana Premier League ahead of schedule, which has left many stakeholders disappointed. Although the original agreement allowed for annual renewals, betPawa has reevaluated its sponsorship strategy and concluded that disengaging from the partnership is in their best interest.

Initially, betPawa had pledged to invest $6 million over three years, with over $2 million already disbursed during their slightly over a year of involvement.

This unforeseen turn of events represents a significant setback for the Ghana Premier League, particularly affecting the clubs, which will now have to rely exclusively on broadcasting rights revenue from Startimes. Prior to betPawa’s involvement, the league had experienced several seasons without a primary sponsor, making the initial deal a reason for celebration, even though its duration has fallen short of expectations.

The situation is still evolving, and further details are anticipated in the days to come.
