Ghana today paid its final respects to the eight public servants who perished in the August 6 helicopter crash, with a solemn interdenominational state funeral held at Independence Square, Accra.
The ceremony drew high-profile political figures, traditional leaders, and grieving families. Tributes poured in from colleagues, friends, and loved ones, capturing the deep sense of loss.
NDC General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey described the late Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, as a man whose life was “defined by courage, intellect, and unyielding dedication to justice.” He added, “We will honour their legacy by continuing the work they believed in.”
The funeral began with moving tributes, followed by Qur’an and Bible readings. Six Christian victims will be interred at the Military Cemetery in Tse Addo with full military honours led by the Ghana Armed Forces. The two Muslim victims were laid to rest on August 10 in accordance with Islamic rites.
Authorities implemented extensive security and logistical measures, closing and diverting major roads in central Accra and setting up designated parking areas to ensure the smooth flow of mourners and dignitaries.
