The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has urgently warned of perilous sea conditions set to affect Ghana’s coastline.

The alert highlights significant wave heights and strong currents, posing considerable threats to life and property.

According to the forecast, on Tuesday, May 21, 2024, wave heights are expected to reach between 2.2 and 2.6 meters, with these hazardous conditions continuing into Wednesday, May 22, 2024, with wave heights ranging from 2.0 to 2.7 meters.

Accompanied by strong currents, these waves pose heightened danger for both mariners and coastal residents.

The potential impacts encompass high waves and rough seas, posing significant threats to life and property.

Navigating small coastal vessels may become extremely challenging, while swimmers and surfers face increased accident risks due to the strong currents.

Furthermore, there is a risk of coastal flooding and erosion in low-lying regions, heightening the peril for communities along the coast.

GMet advises mariners to exercise extreme caution and refrain from operating vessels offshore or in turbulent seas.

Small craft are advised to seek safe harbor until conditions improve, and all maritime safety equipment should be inspected to ensure functionality.

The public and maritime operators are urged to stay informed by monitoring GMet updates.

The agency remains vigilant in tracking the situation and will issue necessary updates to safeguard public safety.
