The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) has announced the temporary suspension of the ongoing King’s Baton Relay, following a tragic helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight prominent Ghanaians, including two government ministers.
In a press statement released on Thursday, the GOC expressed heartbreak and grief over the incident, which occurred near Obuasi on August 6. Among the victims were Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah and Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed.
The GOC extended its deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and the government of Ghana, describing the nation as “in mourning and keening.”
“In light of this tragic loss, we have decided to put on hold the relay activities until further notice,” the statement read. The committee assured the public that further clarity on the resumption of the relay would be provided by the close of day.
The GOC also expressed appreciation for the understanding and cooperation of all parties involved and emphasized its commitment to resuming the relay when circumstances allow.
The King’s Baton Relay, a symbolic event leading up to the Commonwealth Games, was scheduled to make several stops across the country to promote unity and sportsmanship.
