An Adentan Circuit Court has sentenced Edward Unicorn, a 32-year-old accountant, to two years in prison for embezzling GH₵40,433.50 from the Ghana Police Church. Unicorn pleaded guilty to stealing, explaining that he had squandered the funds on Aviator, an online betting game. Despite his pleas for bail to repay the amount, the court handed down the prison sentence.

According to the prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Anim Darko, the complainant is a police officer who also serves as the chaplain of the church. Unicorn was employed as the church’s accountant, a position he abused to embezzle GH₵40,433.50. As part of the sentencing, the Adentan Circuit Court directed Edward Unicorn to pay a fine of GHC5,000. Furthermore, the court ordered the return of GH₵2,775, recovered from Unicorn, to its rightful owner, the Ghana Police Church.

The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Anim Darko, revealed that Unicorn, who was entrusted with managing the church’s finances as its accountant, betrayed this trust by embezzling GH₵40,433.50.

Unicorn revealed that his addiction to Aviator had become so severe that his brother intervened, referring him to a doctor at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. Despite making two phone calls to the doctor, Unicorn failed to follow through with appointments. He confessed that his desperation to win led him to invest the GH₵40,000, hoping to recoup his losses. However, his gamble only resulted in further financial ruin.

The court, presided over by Mrs. Sedinam Awo Kwadam, accepted Unicorn’s guilty plea and convicted him accordingly. His failure to seek help for his addiction ultimately led to his downfall, culminating in his conviction.
