The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), in partnership with the Ghana Queen Mothers Foundation, the Musicians Union of Ghana, and Royal TV, has formally launched a nationwide campaign aimed at combating hate speech within the country’s political landscape.

The initiative which was launched today at the Accra Tourist Information Center, themed “Decency in Politics,” seeks to promote a series of reforms designed to foster respect and civility in political discourse.

During the launch, Chief Executive Officer of the GTA, Akwasi Agyeman, emphasized that Ghana’s peace and stability are significant attractions for tourists and are key characteristics of the nation. “People who want to visit Ghana see Ghana as a beacon of peace, and we pride ourselves on being one of the most peaceful countries in the sub-region.”

He noted that political discourse can and should be conducted peacefully, adding that the prevalence of hate speech during this election season poses a serious threat to the country’s peace, which could adversely affect the anticipated influx of visitors during the upcoming tourist season. “For tourism to thrive, there must be peace. We are in a political season, but politics should not divide us. We must be able to share our ideas peacefully,” Mr. Agyeman stated.

A representative of the Queen Mothers Foundation, Nana Serwaa Brakatuo urged all Ghanaians and members of the press to actively promote the message of peace, especially during this election year. “You have only one thumb for voting, so why engage in violence? Elections are not warfare; they are an expression of your opinion. As mothers and grandmothers, we care deeply for our children, and we urge everyone to come together for peace, which is a priceless commodity that cannot be purchased.”

Second Vice President of the Musicians Union of Ghana and head of the Women’s Desk, Ruth Amankwah Gyamfi, commended the Ghana Queen Mother’s Foundation for leading this peace campaign. She expressed her enthusiasm about women being at the forefront of this initiative, noting, “I am thrilled that our wonderful Queen Mothers are spearheading this effort. As head of the Women’s Desk at MUSIGA, I am committed to promoting women’s leadership because when women rise up, significant change occurs.”
