The President of the Association of Ghana Industries, Dr. Humphrey Ayim-Darke, has highlighted the significant growth of Ghana’s shipping industry in recent years, particularly in its infrastructure and capacity to manage increasing trade demands, including thermal upgrades and carbon-handling capabilities.

Speaking at the launch of the Ghana Shippers’ Authority 50th Anniversary celebration at the Marriot Hotel in Accra on Friday, November 29, 2024, Dr. Ayim-Darke commended the industry for its investments in infrastructure, digitalization, and security measures, which he described as vital steps towards advancing the sector.

However, he noted that the industry continues to face persistent challenges that require collective action. These he said include port congestion, the high cost of shipping services, and the environmental impact of shipping activities.

Dr. Ayim-Darke stressed the importance of addressing these issues collaboratively, he called for measures such as improving port efficiency, sustained investment in port automation and digitalization, expanding port facilities, and adopting advanced technologies like blockchain to enhance coordination between stakeholders and private sector operations.

He advocated for the reduction of taxes, port charges, and logistics fees, which he believes would significantly improve the industry’s performance and competitiveness.
