Former Gender Minister, Sarah Adwoa Safo has refuted claims that she betrayed the new Patriotic Party (NPP) by voting for Alban Bagbin against Professor Mike Oquaye for the Speakership of the 8th Parliament.

According to the former Member of Parliament for Dome Kwabenya and Deputy Majority Leader, she and Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu told president Akufo-Addo Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye will lose the Speakership election if he was nominated.

She stated that she voted for Professor Mike Oquaye and will not allow anybody to impugn her character as a traitor who betrayed the NPP.

“I voted for Professor Mike Oquaye because I wouldn’t have gone there if I was not going to vote. I know everyone who voted against Professor Mike Oquaye and this country will turn upside down if I decide to mention names”.

“We went to tell President Akufo-Addo that the MPs are giving a signal that they don’t want Professor Mike Oquaye and something needed to be done about it. But he still insisted that he wanted Professor Mike Oquaye as Speaker and that we should whip everybody in line.”

“I voted for Professor Mike Oquaye because I wouldn’t have gone there if I was not going to vote. I know everyone who voted against Professor Mike Oquaye and this country will turn upside down if I decide to mention names.”

She added that the votes were not counted during the Speakership election because of the chaotic scenes so nobody should blame her for Professor Mike Oquaye’s defeat.

“When we went to the House, those who had threatened to vote against him didn’t change their minds. Those who voted against Professor Mike Oquaye were not only two but were many and that is why Hon Carlos Ahenkorah went to snatch the ballot box in order to save the NPP from a shameful defeat.”

“If we had counted the votes, it would have been more shameful for the NPP so nobody should blame me. We couldn’t count the votes because of the chaos and then leadership decided to give it to Bagbin in order not to create any vacuum so why would anybody blame me for Professor Mike Oquaye’s defeat?
