The Head of Player Relations for the Professional Footballers Association of Ghana (PFAG), Yusif Chibsah says no Ghanaian club can force players to accept pay cut amid the coronavirus pandemic.
There have been calls on local players to emulate their counterparts in Europe, as some players have agreed to take a pay cut to help reduce the financial crisis for their various clubs amid coronavirus storm.
The outbreak of the disease has caused for the suspension of football related activities as club owners and administrators begin to take drastic decisions.
The Covid-19 pandemic has plunged a lot of economics into financial difficulties affecting clubs as a result.
According to Yusif Chibsah, clubs cannot decide solely on reducing the salaries of players without their consent.
Speaking in an interview on Happy FM he said,“It is illegal for club administrators to reduce the salaries of players without their consent. FIFA even frowns on it. It is very wrong for the team managers to slash the player’s salaries to a flat rate because they all receive different salaries.
No player can be forced to slash his wages”.
He added that the PFAG will continue to protect the rights and interests of players in this matter.
“Our core mandate is to protect the rights and interests of the players so if it comes up to our notice we will take the issue up. The players cannot be forced”.
Some players in the Ghana Premier League have kicked against the move to reduce their salaries.
Other comments from GPL players on pay cut
According to Great Olympics captain Gladson Awako, it will be unfair to reduce the salaries of players due to the monies players receive here in Ghana.
Medeama’s Daniel Agyin also stated that Ghanaian players deserve an increment and not a pay cut.
Aduana Stars Yahaya Mohammed also told Happy FM that club administrators must consult players before such a decision is taken.
