The Deputy Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources and Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya West, Gizella Tetteh-Agbotui, has called on Ghanaians to prioritize investing in housing rather than spending heavily on luxury items like cars.
Speaking during the International Building, Infrastructure and Investment Expo 2025, the Deputy Minister stressed the need for citizens to plan towards home ownership to ease the growing pressure on rental accommodation.
Responding to a question on the role of the Rent Control Department in regulating rent prices, she explained that while the department has the mandate to enforce regulations, the practice of tenants willingly paying rent advances of two or more years makes enforcement difficult.
“Rent Control may emphasize that rent periods should be six months or less, but if individuals choose to pay for two years or more, it becomes difficult to regulate,” she noted.
Mrs. Tetteh-Agbotui further revealed that a bill will soon be presented to Parliament to review and strengthen the mandate of Rent Control, including a possible name change to Rent Management to better reflect its functions.
She emphasized that while not everyone may be able to build a home, government is working to create policies and initiatives that will make housing more accessible and affordable.
