Managing Editor of online news portal, Whatsup News, David Tamakloe has countered the Electoral Commission Chair (EC), Jean Mensa for describing Ghana’s 2020 election as one worth duplicating by all of West Africa.

He believes events leading up to the election and other happenings during the election were of poor taste as for the first time in Ghana’s history, an election “recorded proper acts of violence.”

Stating some events leading up to the elections, David Tamakloe indicated that the EC completely neglected the Inter Party Advisory Committee’s (IPAC) role and contribution for a free and fair election and only did things their way. “IPAC’s contribution were not respected, the EC was supposed to conduct a free and fair election but this did not look like that. The report from the EU election observers was bizarre and for the first time for the 1st time in our history we’ve recorded proper violence in an election.

For Jean Mensa to say our election was an exemplary one worth emulating by ECOWAS, I am sorry. The coup we’re witnessing in ECOWAS is because the people are losing faith in the electoral system. The respective EC’s are to ensure the election is free and fair. “

In his opinion, the announcement of the election was done in a funny way as the EC used a venue different from what they publicized earlier. “There was so much suspicion in the entire process and this shouldn’t be an election ECOWAS has to be happy about. Ghana’s 2020 election is not a model election for ECOWAS. If we make an election which recorded 8 deaths with several more injured a model for ECOWAS then Africa is in trouble.

In the Editors’ Take discussion on the Happy Morning show with Sefah-Danquah who sat in for Samuel Eshun, David Tamakloe described election 2020 as a “terrible one. The election left a scar on Ghanaians and if God had not touched the heart of the citizenry and they had reacted, we wouldn’t be where we are now. Death and violence cannot be the model for any election and the EC chair should go back to the books and review what happened to ensure it never repeats itself.

Chair of the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC) Jean Adukwei Mensa has expressed pride in the process and outcome of the December 7, 2020 elections of Ghana, recommending same to other West African nations.

She said Ghana’s latest election has become a case study for most advanced democracies in the world that they are ready to take a leaf or two from it.

Jean Mensa made this known on Wednesday, October 13 while speaking at the opening of the High Level Meeting of the Parliament of the Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas) in Winneba, Central Region.

She described the elections as “historic” in many ways.

“I humbly refer to Ghana’s 2020 elections as historic for the transparency, the credibility, the cost-effectiveness, the high turn-out and the peaceful conduct that characterized it.

“So orderly, so methodical, so calm were the polls on the 7th of December, 2020 that BBC could find no other way to describe our elections than boring.”
