President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has stated that food security in Ghana has significantly improved under his administration.

Delivering his final State of the Nation Address (SONA) in Parliament on Friday, January 3, 2025, President Akufo-Addo, who assumed office in 2016, highlighted his government’s achievements in agriculture.

He emphasized the administration’s focus on modernizing agriculture by introducing innovative, state-of-the-art techniques beyond traditional rain-dependent farming. “Agriculture remains the backbone of Ghana’s economy,” he said.

The president particularly underscored cocoa as a cornerstone of the nation’s economy. He lauded a strategic partnership between Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire established under his leadership, which guarantees a fixed premium of $400 million per ton added to the selling price of cocoa beans. “Under the aegis of the strategic partnership agreement between our two countries, we ensure that our hardworking cocoa farmers receive a fairer share of the global value chain, indeed receiving the highest prices in the history of the cocoa industry in Ghana,” he stated.

He also mentioned other achievements, including the construction and commissioning of the James Town Fishing Harbor in September 2024, attributing these efforts to a rise in agricultural growth from 2.7% in 2016 to 5.7% in 2023 under his administration.
