Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey is set to occupy the office of the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth

The foreign affairs minister was selected by the Commonwealth Heads of Government earlier today, October 26, 2024 at the 27th Commonwealth Heads of State and Government Summit held in Apia, Samoa.

Madam Botchwey as she takes over from Patricia Scotland, becomes the first Ghanaian in the history of the Commonwealth to occupy the position of Secretary-General and has been showered with many congratulatory messages from diplomats and heads of state in Africa and abroad. “I’m honoured and humbled by the trust of Commonwealth leaders. A lot of work lies ahead. But together, we shall work for a New Commonwealth that works for all its citizens.” The diplomat said in a post on X after her appointment.

She extended profound appreciation in a subsequent post to the President of Ghana, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for his unwavering leadership and support. “On a personal note, I wish to express my sincerest gratitude to the President. He was my immediate boss as foreign minister and appointed me as foreign minister as well. I thank him for his unwavering leadership and support over the course of my tenure as minister.”
