President of the Ghana Olympic Committee, Richard Akpokavie has congratulated the national amateur boxing team, Black Rockets, to use their success at the 2025 Africa Youth Boxing Championship.

Desmond Pappoe, Mathias Ashetey and George Dowuona all won gold medals in the 75kg, 51kg and 54kg weight categories respectfully in Conakry, Guinea.

The team, led by the leadership of the Ghana Boxing Federation paid a courtesy call on the GOC President to officially present the medals and also to introduce themselves to the new leadership.

Akpokavie, speaking at the short ceremony said the hard work of the athletes had not only benefited the boxing community but also brought glory to the Ghana Olympic Committee.

“This is what we want to show to Ghanaians and the Sports Ministry that with the right support, we can go far and win more medals for Ghana. This is the time to change the narrative, and we must come together and make this work,” he said.

Akpokavie also congratulated the boxers for their achievements but urged them to train hard and prepare to qualify for the Youth Olympics in Senegal because that will be a bigger price.

“There will be more competitions to get the team in shape, so I urge you all to take advantage of these opportunities and win medals for Ghana.”

The GOC President congratulated the leadership of the Ghana Boxing Federation for the hard work in getting the amateur boxing team on track.
