Nana Duku Awusaa II, the Mankrado of Gomoa Adzetem in the Central Region, has issued a passionate appeal to the government to urgently address a growing water crisis affecting his community and several neighboring towns.
Speaking with Happy Kasiebo, the chief attributed the crisis to the devastating impact of illegal mining activities in the Eastern Region, which have severely polluted the Ayensu River a vital water source for the area.
“The damage caused by galamsey is not limited to Gomoa Adzetem,” he said. “Communities such as Tekyam, Potsin, Dominase, Adawukwaa, Panfokrom, Mampong, and others are all struggling to access clean and safe water.”
Nana Duku Awusaa II condemned the miners for prioritizing personal gain over public welfare, warning that the continued consumption of contaminated water poses serious health risks, particularly to students at Panfokrom Technical Institute.
While acknowledging the efforts of local Assembly Member Japhet Appiah, who has been working to provide water to affected residents, the chief stressed that the burden is too great for one individual to bear alone.
“If the government does not intervene, the financial strain on both the Assembly Member and the people who must purchase water will become unbearable,” he emphasized.
He concluded by calling on the Central Regional Minister who hails from Potsin and the government to take swift action to restore access to clean water and bring relief to the suffering communities.
