The government has announced plans to phase out the use of wooden school furniture in a bid to promote sustainability.
Speaking at the World Environment Day celebrations in Kwabenya, President Mahama outlined environmental reforms aimed at protecting Ghana’s forests and tackling plastic pollution.
He stated that schools would transition to furniture made from recycled plastic or metal instead of wood, emphasizing the need to curb tree felling while encouraging eco-friendly alternatives.
“We can’t be planting trees and cutting them down at the same time and so to reduce the tree cutting, it is my intention to issue a directive to stop the use of wood for school furniture. We are soon going to pass a directive so that school furniture will no longer be made of wood so that we can stop the cutting down of trees. “
