In a surprising turn of events, the much-anticipated 2023 Gbese Homowo Charity Cup clash between Accra Hearts of Oak and Accra Great Olympics has been abruptly called off.

The match, which was slated to take place at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday as part of the annual Homowo festival, has left supporters puzzled and seeking answers.

The Accra Great Olympics’ Communications Director, Saint Osei, in an interview on Happy FM’s Wamputu Sports with Joe Debrah, addressed rumors surrounding their withdrawal and set the records straight, clarifying that no official letter was issued regarding their withdrawal from the competition.

Osei emphasized that no match day tickets had been sold or printed, effectively refuting any claims that the organizers would incur financial losses due to their absence.

“Everything happens for a reason, it isn’t like we are scared of Hearts of Oak. We have always had the better hand on them,” Osei asserted, quelling any speculation that fear was behind their withdrawal. He stood firm in his confidence that Great Olympics has historically maintained an upper hand in clashes against their counterparts.

The abrupt cancellation has left many questions unanswered, as Accra Great Olympics did not divulge the specific reasons behind their decision to withdraw from the tournament.
