The championship, set to be held at the Ga Mashie Hall of the Trust Sports Emporium in Accra, will bring together over 300 athletes and officials from more than 20 African countries. The event promises to be one of the continent’s premier youth competitions, providing a platform for young lifters to showcase their talent and determination.
At the launch, GWF President and Weija-Gbawe MP, Jerry Ahmed, expressed pride in Ghana’s selection as host and reaffirmed the Federation’s commitment to delivering a world-class event. He acknowledged the initial delays caused by national events and an election impasse but assured attendees that preparations have been ongoing behind the scenes.
Mr. Ahmed announced that key partnerships have been secured with the Accra City Hotel and Central Hotel for accommodation, and highlighted the support received from the Weightlifting Federation of Africa, which has contributed $15,000 towards the event. He also made a passionate appeal for further support from both public and private stakeholders, noting that at least 700,000 Ghana Cedis will be needed to deliver a successful championship.
The launch event brought together sports authorities, federation officials, athletes, and media representatives, all of whom were briefed on the championship’s objectives and schedule. The GWF aims to use the tournament to boost local interest in weightlifting, promote youth sports, and showcase Ghana’s capacity to host international events.
With strong interest already confirmed from countries such as Algeria, Egypt, Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, and host nation Ghana, the 2025 African Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championship is set to be a landmark event in African sports.
