Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh paid an unannounced visit to the Tamale Teaching Hospital on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, to assess healthcare delivery challenges in the Northern Region following widespread social media reports alleging negligence in the death of a patient at the facility.

According to reports, the deceased patient was referred to the facility but due to some alleged negligence involving some staff, the patient died.

The visit resulted in a confrontation between the Minister and staff of the hospital.

Mr. Akandoh expressed concern over the number of non-functional medical equipment at the hospital, despite payments being made to suppliers.

He emphasized the need for accountability, stating, “You cannot supply equipment without installing it, and yet you have been paid.”

The Minister also highlighted President John Dramani Mahama’s commitment to resolving the persistent water crisis affecting healthcare delivery at TTH and the region as a whole.

He described the issue as beyond the health sector and assured residents that it remains a priority for the President.

Touching on plans to replace faulty equipment, Akandoh noted that interventions from his ministry would be guided by the hospital management’s priorities.

He urged residents to maintain confidence in the hospital and assured them of improved healthcare delivery in the near future.

“When we finish with them, we will all think through it, because I cannot do it all alone. I have to involve them, and we are thinking through it together. Everybody should remain calm and let us continue to patronize the facility”.
