The Ministry of Health has refuted claims by former Health Minister Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye, who alleged that the government has failed to release funds for the ongoing La General Hospital reconstruction project.
Dr. Okoe Boye had earlier accused the government of abandoning the project, despite ₵60 million being allocated for it in the national budget.
In response, Ministry spokesperson Tony Goodman reaffirmed the government’s commitment to completing the hospital, emphasizing that funding is not the issue.
“The government is making ₵130 million available the Minister has publicly stated this,” Goodman explained. “We’ve asked the contractor to return to the site. Whether it’s ₵30 million or ₵60 million, it’s not for Dr. Okoe Boye to determine.”
Goodman also criticised the former minister for shifting blame, suggesting that Dr. Okoe Boye had ample opportunity to advance the project during his own tenure.
“He failed the people and couldn’t deliver on expectations. Now that a new minister is in charge, he should step aside and allow the work to continue,” he said.
The La General Hospital project has faced multiple setbacks since the facility was demolished in 2020. Its delay has sparked ongoing concerns from residents and health professionals, who continue to demand its swift completion.
