Security measures at the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) have been significantly strengthened following the arrest of New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi.
The arrest occurred shortly after Wontumi honored an invitation from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to assist with an undisclosed investigation.
His detention quickly sparked a strong reaction from party members, leading to a rapid gathering of NPP supporters and regional executives at EOCO’s headquarters in Accra.
With tensions rising, military personnel were deployed to maintain order and prevent any potential escalation.
As of Tuesday evening, EOCO had not released an official statement detailing the specific reasons for Wontumi’s detention, fueling speculation and concern among political circles.
In response, NPP’s National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, voiced strong opposition to the handling of the situation.
Speaking to reporters, he condemned EOCO’s refusal to grant party executives access to Wontumi, calling it a form of political intimidation.
“This situation is unfortunate. Denying access to our own Regional Chairman without justification raises serious concerns. We will not tolerate any form of political intimidation disguised as law enforcement.”
The incident has intensified political tensions, with the NPP signaling its readiness to resist what it perceives as targeted actions against its members ahead of the upcoming general elections.
Meanwhile, EOCO has yet to clarify the nature of its investigation or Wontumi’s status.
