The National Security Coordinator, Joshua Kyeremeh, is dead.

He died on the dawn of Monday, January 18, 2021, at the Ga East Municipal Hospital, where he was receiving treatment.

Accra-based Asasse radio reported that he died of kidney complications while receiving treatment for COVID-19 at the hospital.

President Akufo-Addo in 2017 appointed Mr Kyeremeh as the National Security Coordinator.

Mr Kyeremeh before his appointment in 2017 was the Director of the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI), now known as the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB).

The NIB has investigative jurisdiction to arrest or detain and interrogate over a wide range of criminal offences.

Among the duties of the NIB are dealing with organised crime and financial crime, and providing intelligence to counter threats to Ghana’s national security

Mr Kyeremeh worked at the BNI for about 22 years, where he served at command levels in the Northern, Upper East, Ashanti and Greater Accra Regions.

He rose through the ranks to become the Deputy Director BNI and ultimately, the Director BNI from 2005 to 2009.

Mr Kyeremeh was part of the transition team after the 7 December 2020 elections.

He is among high profile personalities, including Prof Jacob Plange-Rhule, the Rector of the Ghana Physicians and Surgeons College and a former New Patriotic Party (NPP) General Secretary, Kwadwo Owusu-Afriyie, who died from the disease.
