Many youth rely on second-hand clothing trade for livelihood after school – Kantamanto trader reveals

Clothing sellers and traders at the Kantamanto trading center have expressed disappointment over the slow turnout of customers during the ongoing festive season.

Traders in an engagement with happyghana.com, lamented that business this December has been significantly slower compared to previous years.

“Things are not the way they used to be. Before, during the festive season in December, when we go to pick up the clothes, we bring in so much, and by the end of the day, everything is sold. But this whole week, since December 24, it has not been good,” a thrift clothing seller identified as Pappy Gee shared.

He further explained that previously he earned between 2,000 and 10,000 Ghana cedis during the festive period. However, this year, most of his regular customers have not shown up. “All the customers we usually expect during the festive season did not come to town this year. Things have become really expensive, so even the few people who come here cannot buy the clothes and shoes they desire,” he added.

The traders, however, hope that the inauguration of the Mahama-led government in January 2025 will improve business and bring better market opportunities in the coming year.
